The Unexpected Way I Became A Therapeutic Tarot Reader (With A Little Help From Spirit Guides)
Tarot and Oracle cards helped me to change my life.
When I got my first set of oracle cards back in 2015, I was still fighting the Black Dog of depression.
I was on a mission to ditch the black dog once and for all and I was exploring any and all methods that could help me.
Tarot and Oracle cards weren’t part of my plan, they just arrived in my life by surprise.

In my last post (read it here:) I talked about how using the Nature’s Whispers Oracle Deck by Angela Hartfield and Josephine Wall helped me to feel more positive when I was feeling depressed.
I loved pulling a card every morning as part of my daily Spiritual practice.
The messages helped me feel more optimistic and grateful for the wonders of nature all around me where I live in Spain.
Then it started to get a little weird!
What I can only describe as an inner knowing guided me towards how many cards I should pull.
Sometimes cards would fly out of the deck at me.
These cards would have the exact guidance I needed. I remember the full moon card jumping out of the deck just as I was preparing to do my full moon rituals.
There were definitely goosebumps that day!
It was a bit unsettling at times, but I wasn’t afraid. I felt that whoever was showing me the cards was there for my greater good.
Then one day as I was meditating, my Spirit Guides began speaking to me clearly.
I’d asked the cards to show me my purpose in life, but the Nature’s Whispers deck was not making things clear.
I heard a clear voice telling me that my name is Maria Gaian and my Soul’s mission is to create sacred spaces for other wounded Souls to heal and thrive.
Again, I wasn’t afraid. I felt nothing but the energy of love around me.
That experience blew my mind.
And once the voices began to speak to me, they never stopped!
I realised I had the gift of clairaudience. Woah! WTAF??
Now, this was shocking, but it turned out that it wasn’t a new thing. I remembered a voice speaking to me when I was a child, but my parents had put the fear of god into me about gifts like this, saying it was demons speaking to me.
And so I’d suppressed my gift for years.
But now I’d rediscovered the voices and I realised that all I had to do was tune in and listen!
The voices guided me to get more card decks – ones that would answer my questions in a more sophisticated way. I added more decks to my collection. (Any excuse, right?)
Anything that I felt drawn to – whether it was the artwork or the subject matter – I played with it. Turns out I love decks that are based around animals and nature.
I began learning more about the Tarot – as a kid I’d been taught that the cards themselves were demonic – but as I discovered more, I saw how the cards weren’t evil at all.

The more I read the cards, the more intuitive messages I got and the more my Guides spoke to me.
I developed a deep connection with the cards and the Spirit world.
And that’s when I decided that maybe I shouldn’t keep this guidance to myself.
Way back in 2005, I started my career as an Equine Facilitated Learning Practitioner and I helped people heal through working and playing with horses.
I’d been looking at ways that I could expand my service that were therapeutic, but also fun. Ways that would help clients to understand themselves better.
I began tapping into the wisdom of Epona – the Celtic Horse Goddess, using equine themed oracle cards and I saw how tarot and oracle cards could be really helpful in my live sessions with clients.

Just as I was about to open my new ecotherapy clinic in Spain, the pandemic hit.
Like so many other people, I had to rethink. Using my training as a coach, counselor and therapist, I began giving therapeutic tarot card readings online.
I did all sorts of different readings, but I began to specialise in readings on YouTube for people who wanted to start a project or business of some sort, but felt blocked.
Bit niche, I know, but it came very naturally to me.
I also offered personal readings.
Clients asked me a question and I would record myself doing a reading to help them find the answers.
It turns out that my Guides are very enthusiastic about helping as many people as possible to heal and thrive!
My Spirit Guides are my Grandmother, her sister Dorothy who died long before I was born, and their mother – my Great Grandmother. It seems our gifts have been passed down the maternal line as all of them were highly sensitive to energy.
My Great Nan, Edith, does NOT sugar coat anything. She calls a spade a spade, as we say in Yorkshire, and if she thinks someone needs some tough love, she isn’t afraid to give it out.
Edith has a wicked sense of humour, is quite sweary, and I love working with her.
I wish I’d known her better when she was on this Earthly plane, cos she must have been a lot of fun. By the time I was born, she was getting older and was more than a little cantankerous. (She’s not keen on my saying this, but admits it’s true!)
My Nan, Eileen, is a lot more compassionate and gentle with her advice, but she has a lot of common sense guidance that can really make a difference.
Her sister, my great Aunt Dorothy doesn’t really speak to me. It’s hard to explain, but she’s all about feelings.
I felt a bit nervous about doing the readings, especially when I knew that the client might not want to hear what came through, but we just got on with it.
The responses I got from clients when they watched their recordings blew me away!

Combining the wisdom of my wonderful Spirit Guides with healing energy, modern coaching and counseling techniques and Therapeutic Witchcraft™ has created something very special.
It allows me to ask deep questions and to reframe situations in ways that give my clients some real ‘Aha’ moments!
I’m delighted to announce that after a little while away, I’m about to start putting videos back on YouTube again!
I have given my old channel a revamp and rebranded it as the Ditch the Black Dog Channel. Keep an eye out for my therapeutic tarot and oracle card readings designed to help you survive depression.
I look forward to connecting with you over there!
