Why listen to me? 

Hi, I’m Maria Gaian, and I know how it feels to live with depression.

As a neurodivergent (ASD & ADHD) abuse survivor, it often felt like depression was embedded in my DNA.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t escape the prison of my own mind.

I felt broken beyond repair.

And that feeling was reflected in every part of my life.

I had zero confidence or self esteem. My creativity and courage to try new things waned and eventually disappeared the more depressed I became. 

Occasionally, I’d pick myself up and feel better. 

 

I managed to rebuild my life a few times, meeting my beloved Soulmate, starting fantastic businesses, having my gorgeous kids.

From the outside, my life seemed perfect. I looked like I had it all!

But because I never really dealt with the root causes of the depression, I always had the black dog snapping at my heels.

All it would take was a small setback and my world would fall apart again. Just like it did in 2013.

 

In 2013, it all came to a head and I had a nervous breakdown.

 

I was diagnosed with clinical depression, and an anxiety disorder on top of the cPTSD I was already struggling with.

This time everything went to complete sh*t.

I lost my dream business, which not only broke my heart – but we had no money.

Which meant we couldn’t pay the rent and we had to move into emergency housing.

I was publically shamed by people I’d never even met. 

Everything I’d worked so hard for was gone, including my reputation. 

 

I couldn’t see the point in living. My thoughts were extremely dark.

 

My Soulmate felt isolated and neglected, I had no interest in our relationship.

My house was always a mess and physically I let myself go, eating junk food and lying in bed in my pyjamas all day.

My children suffered because I was so consumed with my own pain that I wasn’t present for them.

All I taught them was how to be depressed and anxious, too. 

 

It was the look on my five year old child’s face when I refused to get out my stinking bed and eat dinner with her in the kitchen that finally shook me out of my hellscape.

I’d arrived at a crossroads and I knew I had to make a choice: –

Carry on wasting my precious life, or get out of my comfort zone and start changing things.

I chose to stop existing and start living again.

My search for a solution began.

 

The doctors had already given me antidepressants and six weeks of therapy.

Antidepressants almost ruined my life – but that’s a story for another time.

Therapy didn’t help long term. In fact, I silently cried through most of it. 

I needed something deeper.

I’d trained as a coach and counsellor years before, but despite being on the other side of the room, neither traditional coaching or counselling worked to help rid me of depression.

It wasn’t enough and I needed more. 

I needed: – 

 

❤️ ongoing support, not one hour a week.

💚 a sacred, beautiful healing space, not a sterile clinical setting, where I felt like I was in an interrogation! 

💜 connection with someone who truly understood – someone who had faced the black dog and lived to tell the tale. A compassionate mentor who wasn’t afraid to help me dig through the messiness of my life and help me sort it out.

💙 real, practical, manageable step by step ways to heal. I was suffering from severe situational depression that would only lift if I escaped the circumstances that created it! No one ever suggested changing things. I needed someone to help me make a plan and then give me gentle nudges to take baby steps towards making it happen. 

🧡 ways to feel in control of my life instead of often feeling like a helpless victim of other people’s decisions. 

I dreamed of going on a residential retreat that specialised in depression recovery. </p>
<p>Somewhere quiet, where I could be surrounded by nature, take time to think and sort my messy life out.

I’m now a certified nature therapist and energy healer, as well as advanced hypnotherapist, animal assisted therapist and mental wellness mentor.

Is the Ditch the Black Dog Retreat a Substitute for Therapy?

As a certified coach, counsellor, energy and Soul healer and nature therapist, I’m professionally bound to tell you that your first port of call when you feel depressed should be your doctor or a licensed medical professional who can prescribe medication.

But I have a caveat.

If for some reason you can’t get access to therapy, (maybe you’re on a long waiting list) or you’ve tried traditional therapy and counseling but just didn’t benefit from it the way you hoped, the Ditch the Black Dog Virtual Retreat could be for you.

You could use the resources in the Retreat in conjunction with therapy, to fill in the gaps between sessions or to help you fast track your recovery.

Your experience with depression is personal to you and it’s entirely your choice how you choose to help yourself.

You know yourself better than anyone and you know what your personal challenges are.

If what you’ve been doing isn’t working for you, it’s ok to try something different.

My advice is to take what works for you and leave the rest behind.

What if I don’t have the energy to do much?

You’re not alone! That’s exactly why this retreat exists. Everything is designed to meet you where you are, with no pressure or overwhelm. Some days, all you might do is sit in a virtual forest and breathe. And that’s enough. Healing happens in tiny, sacred moments. You’re allowed to go slow.

Do I have to show my face or talk in live sessions?

Absolutely not. You’re always in control of your participation. Many people start by listening with their camera off, and that’s completely welcome. You’ll never be pressured to speak, share, or reveal anything unless you want to. This space is designed to feel safe, gentle, and invitational – not performative or overwhelming.

What if I fall behind or can’t keep up?

This retreat isn’t a race. It’s a sanctuary.

There’s no such thing as falling behind here.

You’ll receive ongoing access to replays, prompts, rituals, and group support.

You can go at your own pace, revisit things when you’re ready, and dip in and out as needed. Life is unpredictable and your healing should be flexible.

Is this a replacement for therapy or medication?

No.
This is a complementary approach, not a substitute. If you’re working with a therapist or taking medication, this retreat is designed to support that, not replace it. I’m here to offer you tools and spaces that feel nourishing and help you reconnect with your own power, not to override professional care.

I’m not a witch — can I still join?

Yes.
You don’t need to be a witch, identify with that label, or have any previous experience with magick or spirituality. All that’s needed is an open heart and a curious mind. Whether you’re secular, spiritual, or somewhere in between, the practices are designed to meet you where you are and support your healing journey.

Is this safe if I’m in a really dark place?

Yes — but with care.
This retreat was created because of those dark places. It’s been built to hold people gently, with zero judgment and lots of grounding. However, if you’re currently in acute crisis or feeling unsafe, please prioritize getting the urgent support you need. When you’re ready, the retreat will be here.

I’ve tried so many things. What makes this different?

I’m scared to invest in myself right now. What if I can’t commit or get the value?

That’s so valid. Many of us have learned to put our own needs last.

Do I need to believe in magick or spells?

Nope.
You don’t need to believe in anything you’re not comfortable with. Think of the magick here as a poetic, powerful framework — a way to re-enchant your life and give shape to transformation. If it resonates, wonderful. If not, you’ll still benefit deeply from the practices, the science-backed healing tools, and the supportive circle.

I’m neurodivergent / highly sensitive / introverted. Will this be overwhelming?

No — it’s designed with you in mind.
The retreat space is soft, sensory, and optional. You can engage as much or as little as feels right. There’s structure without pressure, and lots of room to be yourself. Me and many of the people that I’ve worked with over the years are neurodivergent, highly sensitive, and/or trauma survivors. I wanted to create a space that finally feels like home.

What about accessibility?

We aim to make this retreat as inclusive and supportive as possible. That includes:

  • Audio replays and video captions for live sessions

  • Written transcripts of key rituals, prompts, and guided practices

  • Flexible participation — camera/mic optional, chat available

  • Low-sensory virtual spaces that feel calm, clear, and non-overstimulating

If there’s something specific you need in order to access this retreat safely and fully, you’re invited to reach out. Wherever possible, accommodations will be made with love.

What time are the live events? I’m in a different time zone.

Live events are hosted from Central European Time (CET), and I do my best to rotate session times so more people around the world can attend live.

However, your sleep and mine are sacred — so I don’t host 4 a.m. sessions either!

All live sessions are recorded, and replays are uploaded within 24 hours. You can always catch up when it works for you, and submit questions or reflections in advance if you can’t attend live.

How do I cancel my membership?

No awkward emails or hoops to jump through. You’re in full control.

You can cancel anytime directly from your account dashboard (Zenler handles this automatically via Stripe or PayPal). Your membership will remain active until the end of your current billing period.

No guilt, no pressure. You’re always welcome to return if and when it feels right.

What’s your refund policy?

Due to the digital and energetic nature of this retreat, refunds aren’t available after purchase.

However, you’re welcome to cancel your monthly membership anytime — there’s no minimum contract, and you won’t be charged for future months once you cancel.
